So yeah, things are going great. Trump’s remarks, made during a campaign speech in Nebraska on Monday night, drew condemnation from members of both parties, including a Republican running in a toss-up district in the San Diego area.

It’s just the latest example of the risk that comes with Republicans campaigning with Trump, who is historically unpopular and continues to defend his war and promote AI data centers while on the campaign stump.

Republicans find themselves in an unenviable dilemma. Trump is toxic among an overwhelming majority of voters, but they cannot completely ditch him, lest they alienate the hardcore MAGA base. The result is what we saw on Monday in Nebraska: cheers from the crowd in the room and somewhere between a facepalm and outright revulsion from most everyone else across the country.

This bind is why Republicans and their allied PACs and special interests are relying on hundreds of millions of dollars in ads and some deceptive tactics to try and prevent a potential drubbing in November.

So far, it doesn’t appear to be working. Polls show Democrats well ahead in Senate races in red states like Alaska, Ohio, and Texas, with states like Kansas, Nebraska, and South Carolina also in toss-up territory.

And based on our local reporting in some of those states and others across the country, their headaches aren’t going away anytime soon.

That’s how much is expected to be spent on advertising in the 2026 midterm elections when all is said and done, according to AdImpact. This figure would surpass the $8.9 billion spent in the 2022 midterms and the $11.2 billion spent in the 2024 presidential cycle.

That’s a lot of money, and the partisan breakdown is nowhere near equal. Republicans and their aligned outside groups hold a major spending edge over Democrats and their allies. In recent weeks, we’ve also seen President Trump’s PAC unleash a firehose of spending, including in many races our state newsrooms are covering.

That money may not be enough to rescue Republicans amid skyrocketing gas, diesel, and utility prices, out-of-control corruption, and a disastrous war in Iran. But it underscores just how much money is coursing through the veins of our political system at a time when ordinary people are finding it harder and harder to scrape by—a bleak contradiction that only a handful of candidates are talking about.

There is now virtually unanimous consensus among political insiders that championing data centers is a toxic stance that can cost a candidate a race. But before data centers became a national political story, they were a local one. And at COURIER, we’ve been covering the data center fights unfolding in communities across the country well before the issue went mainstream.

We saw early on what everyone sees now: people of all political stripes oppose data centers.
